Pregnancy. During pregnancy, the circulatory system expands rapidly, so blood pressure tends to drop. Don't worry, this is normal and will usually return to normal after the mother gives birth.


Heart problems. Some of the heart conditions that can cause low blood pressure include a very low heart rate (bradycardia), heart valve problems, heart attack and heart failure.


Endocrine problems. Thyroid conditions such as parathyroid disease, Addison's disease, low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) or diabetes can trigger low blood pressure.


Dehydration. When the body loses more water than it needs, this condition can cause weakness, dizziness, and fatigue. Fever, vomiting, severe diarrhea, consumption of diuretic drugs and strenuous exercise are some of the factors causing dehydration.


Loss of blood. Losing a lot of blood from a major injury or internal bleeding can reduce the amount of blood in the body, causing a severe drop in blood pressure.


Severe infection (septicemia). Septicemia occurs when an infection in the body has entered the bloodstream. This condition can cause a life-threatening drop in blood pressure (septic shock).


Anaphylaxis. Anaphylaxis is a severe and potentially life-threatening allergic reaction. This can be caused due to food allergies, certain drugs, insect venom, and latex. Anaphylaxis can cause breathing problems, hives, itching, swollen throat and an extreme drop in blood pressure.


Lack of nutrients in the diet. Lack of vitamin B-12 and folate can prevent the body from producing enough red blood cells (anemia), leading to low blood pressure.
